Where to use Rubber Tiles

Rubber tile has huge advantage in high traffic environments.  With a wide selection of colours and patterns available, this material is also finding its way into residential interior and exterior applications. The fact that it is a strong, tough and resilient against a variety of conditions – a proper care for rubber flooring will make it last for twenty years, if not longer.

It has low maintenance, the synthetic flooring is stain resistant than natural rubber.  Polishing the surface with water soluble wax emulsion will make it more resistant to damage and discoloration.  Cleaning just requires no more than the use of mop and warm clean water.

Flooring for Kids

When choosing floor in the kid’s room, you need to consider the safety, durability and ability to clean it easily. Linoleum, rubber and vinyl flooring are the most perfect choices because they are soft, slip resistance which is great characteristic of these floorings. Perfect for the kids is also the point that these floorings are easy to clean as well as absorb the noise.

Now what about other flooring, carpet is soft underfoot, but can stain easily. Be sure to choose the carpet that is stain resistant. Tiles are good choice too, it is easy to clean and durable almost damage proof, but it is very hard so falling on it could injure your kids.

Rustic Contemporary Design, use it for your home.

  1. Start with flooring, as it will be the 2nd biggest space in your room and it will spread throughout many rooms in your home. You may use the dark texture like wood in wide dimension to imitate the rich natural look which always be found in this kind of design.

  1. Walls – use warm colour not a cool colour like pure white or blue, we are achieving the warm cozy feel of rustic charm. You may also try texture paint wall even brushed paint wall will contribute well on this look.

  1. Built-in Furniture, they should blended well with the wall and floor as these are the part that cannot be changed easily. Choose the same colour tone with more added details on one or two focus pieces.

  1. Loose Furniture, I suggest to use contemporary pieces which have clean and neutral designs. This should have a slight contrast to your floor and wall.

Vinyl tile VS Ceramic tile

This week we take a look at two types of flooring, Ceramic Tile and Vinyl Tile. Both are famous and often used in all the interior renovation. Now we would like to find out which is more suitable for your space.

We start with ceramic tiles; this material has been used ever since the ancient time and they are the favourite material of all time. They are scratch resistance, very easy to clean and good for using in the wet area. But they are also prone to the cracking and chipping off, this depends on the quality. They are also slippery if you are using the smooth surface. To solve this, you will need the rough texture ceramic or even change it to homogeneous tile but it will pose another problem, it would be very painful if the child fall on to the hard and rough texture, it will even cut their skin.

What about the vinyl tiles? Introduce in mid-20th century, they are inexpensive alternative to the ceramic tiles. But the new vinyl tile has proven that, they are also more stylish and very practical to use. Vinyl tiles are soft on your feet so they are good for absorbing the impact of falling in children. They are slip resistance, they also give warm feeling when walking on which is great for cold climate. Lastly, they are easy to install as they do not need the grouting like ceramic tile. Vinyl tile can be removed and replaced easily if there are any defect issue on some of the pieces.

This Week’s Blog (17th January 2016)

Let’s do grouting on vinyl tiles

Vinyl tile can be installed in both with or without grouting depend on how you like it. The grouting make vinyl tile looks more like real ceramic tile that will never break no matter what hard object you drop it on!

But of course, there is a down side of it; first we all know that cleaning the grouting line can be a pain. Second you will have to find an experience installer to do this job for you. Do not DIY as it could turn out as a disastrous and hard to fix situation.

Our DV 2023 Brick like colour vinyl composition tile can be installed with grouting to create a ceramic tile look. Or try our modern grey to explore the modern tile look.

Wrongly Hung Curtain Destroy Everything!

The pretty fully decorated room but with wrong way of hanging curtain is like wearing a luxurious gown with slipper. It destroyed every other thing in the room.

Do not just hang the curtain slightly above the window, our expert say- this will make the window looks small and less elegant. You can hang it from the top of ceiling – best to recess a portion of ceiling along the window to accommodate the curtain, and hang it all the way down to the floor. Do not make the curtain float too much from the floor, it should be just nice and small gap for you to pull the curtain (1 inch is enough). Width of curtain also contributed to how it will sit nicely and make a perfect interior.

The curtain should be wide enough to cover the whole window, if you have big window –make sure to have double wide panels on both sides of the frame. Curtain is not only make to block the light – it is the biggest piece of decoration in most room, so make sure to do it right and do not just safe on the cost.

As I mentioned – wrong curtain or wrong way of hanging curtain do destroy the whole interior decoration!

Tips for vinyl flooring protection

Vinyl flooring is a durable and versatile material and if you know how to take care this flooring – it can even stay beautiful for a longer period of time.

When you need to move the big and heavy item, do not drag the item on the floor- you can lay a big piece of plywood and move to pull the object across it. This is to prevent scratches and tears on the flooring. Use floor pads protection to put underneath the furniture legs.  Do place a mat outside entrance to avoid water and more moisture to go into the room.

Don’t use detergents, abrasive cleaners, or “mop and shine” products, as they may leave a dull film on your floor.

Don’t use paste wax or solvent-based polishes.

Don’t use highly abrasive scrubbing tools.

Tips on having a neat and uncluttered house

  1. Clear your mail as soon as you have got it. Opening mail box to find a box full of mail as well as junk mail can be an added stress after a long day of work. Opening the letters and bills immediately and file away important documents. This will help you keep up with your monthly budget as well as clear up a full mountain of junk paper and advertisement leaflets.
  2. Use Digital mode  Keep all the extensive CD/DVD collection and start digitizing all of them – this is also the way to safe guard your precious movie or video (such as video of your child when they were baby). Another way is to start unsubscribe from your newspaper and magazine if you like the online version. But for me, I still prefer the nicely print that is easy on my eyes – kept staring at the screen is not a good idea for tired eyes, after to whole day of staring at your phone.
  3. Buy only if you really need it.  One of the main reason your house gets piles up with clutter is impulse shopping. With easy online shopping that can be reach 24 hours and whenever you feel bore. It is so easy to shop and gets great deal online. But wait a minute, do not buy just because it is cheap – you have to reconsider if your will be using them and for how long. Also consider where you would be keeping them after receiving the items.

Blood Stain!, dabbing the stain with a solution of one table spoon dish-washing liquid and two cups of cold water. Then absorb the liquid with a dry clot. Keep repeating until the stain is gone.

Stain from your pets, the freshly stain is the easiest to remove.   Soak up as much liquid as possible with newspaper or towels, then wash the area with cold water and dry it again. Avoid the removal product that heat the carpet as it will set the stain in deeper.

Why you should respect designer’s opinion.

When you have decided to hire a designer, you would want to make full use of the work they would have to render to you. Here is what you need to consider in order making full use of your money.

Is the designer who charges the design fee is expensive designer? You have engage a designer and he did not even charge you a design fee – what a great deal you must have thought. But think again, that type of designer might have spread out his or her cost under other component that mean you still ended up paying a design fee without knowing it and that is unfair to you. Designer do deserve the fee, as it cover the time taken to analyst your requirement to combine them, filter them to the best and start with design concept, planning as well as making sure that your requirement had been captured and blended well with the functionality – the pretty design had to be able to use well too.

I am not asking you to trust only the high fee designer, you can shortlist 2 to 5 interior designer and do a research of their renovation cost.

You may not go for the design and built designer as they will cover work from design to renovation they will tend to go along with their own contractor so as to make the work done fast and easier for them. But if you hire a designer separately form the contractor team; you may rely on her to oversee the work almost like your trusted professional friend that will watch over the house for you.

How to make full use of your professional designer.

Since you call them a professional designer, you must have known that they are someone that had been practice so long as their experiences are trustworthy.  So “trusting” is the key. You have to trust your designer in order for her to fully devote to design. The designer also have to work hard to earn your trust.

But when it comes to design, you must know that designer should know better; otherwise you will not need her.  Some tips below might help you to deal with your designer.

  1. Be very honest, in order to make her work harder for you, yourself will need to understand and be very open on what idea would you like for your house. You also need to study the drawing that had been submitting to you. If you do not understand the drawing, please be honest and let her know so that she can explain to you or even redraw for you to make you get the full picture of the design she is trying to achieve.
  2. Be very decisive, do not reject the design as many times as you like just because you pay for the design fee. Instead, give the clear instruction to your designer and give reasonable and constructive comments.
  3. Be very clear about what you want, Try to give the full direction in just one or two times so he or she will capture the changes in the shortest time and move on to the next step of design. He or she would be happy to work with you as you can be trusted and Horner your words.

All my years of working – when ever I meet the customer that fully supportive and trusted me, it will inspire me to work even harder for my customer and in the end, all parties are happy.

Break The Rule of Interior Design : Dining Furniture Should Match

Matching all the dining chairs is always safe to make your interior design work. But if you want to make a bold, stylish statement, add in different types of chair will create a WOW factor.

To pull off this look, you’ll need to make sure that the chairs you pick are the correct seating height for the table you’re using. Try choosing the chair of the same style, with one being in different colour and don’t forget to have one that is the main actress of the show.  It could be the bigger sizes in one of the colour (of smaller chair).  This will be a great start of conversation with your guest!

Wood vinyl tile – which way to lay it?

Now that you have chosen the wooden pattern you like. Let’s look at how to lay them, how to lay them in the best direction that will have your room look the best.  Generally wood flooring will look best when running in the same direction as the longest side of your room, it make the room looks longer and more elegant.    This can also be explain in Feng Shui, imagine the hallway of 4′ width and the 9′ long, if you choose to run it in the 9′ length – the good energy will have the smooth flow through this area but if you run them horizontally – you will see a lot of cutting lines against you when you walk pass this hallway, not to mention that these lines will definitely cut away the good flow of energy.

Another point to consider is the entrance of your room; you want to have the floor lay in perpendicular to your view when entering the room, as this will make the timber pattern looking at its best.

Break the rule for your small space

Why does my designer always tells me if you have small space you will need to use light colour wall furniture cannot be too big? That sound boring such limited choice to make when you are choosing the colour or furniture.

So why not break it! Yes, break the rule – have fun.

  1. You don’t need to scale down your furniture; sometimes a single piece of statement bulky furniture will add a lot of appeal to a small space. Just keep the minimum pieces of the rest and make the whole room as tidy as possible. Stuffing those tiny pieces of furniture would make the space feels cramped and crowded.
  2. Break the rule: Paint Ceilings a Light Colour.  Dark ceiling can add depth to a small bright space with light walls, the trick is to us a satin or semi-gloss paint that reflects light. Unlike a flat dark colour, one with sheen will keep your space feeling bright with character.
  3. Break the rule: Paint the walls white. Dark walls can add architectural interest to a small space when paired with features in a contrasting light shade. For example – use one black wall with white furniture and white ceiling, draw the eye to the black and stylish wall – yes it will not make the room looks small but it will make the room so interestingly refreshing.

Pattern is one of the key to add extra interest to a room, but how to choose them to match your decoration. Since there are all kinds of patterns – we shall look at each category to distinguish how suitable they are to each type of decoration style.

  1. Subtle Pattern is a small scale pattern in toning colour. They usually make the room looks bigger although they might blend into the room and disappear as a background. It can be good for the small room that emphasized in small display item instead.

Use Vinegar to Clear the Smelly Air in Kitchen

You hate the smell of fried fish from yesterday evening; mix a pot of 1/2 cup white vinegar in 1 cup water. Let it boil until the liquid is almost gone. You will have a fresh kitchen as you like it.

And how about the pan, if you feel like having a new one by not spending any money. Just simply combine equal parts salt and flour and add just enough vinegar to make a paste. Work the paste around the cooking surface and the outside of the utensil, then rinse off with warm water and dry thoroughly with a soft dish towel.

For wooden cutting board, wipe them with undiluted white vinegar after each use. The acetic acid in vinegar is a good disinfectant against harmful bacteria. Do not use water and dishwashing detergent as it can weaken the surface of wood fibers.

Re modelling your flooring? – Just have them overlaid with new flooring

The pain and misery of demolishing an old material that has to go….well! You do not need to make them go. They can…well, stay! Imagine the scraping off linoleum or glue down vinyl sheet! What about laboriously chipping away the ceramic tile?

Overlaying is the answer to this; any floor can be installed on top of any other flooring with insertion of the right substance between the two materials. Some flooring materials prove themselves to be more suitable due to these reasons. Height of building – there is certain height limit that needs to be observing for the interior space. The appliances height, the kitchen counters top height that will not work if they are too low.

Below is some of the flooring that work better than others.

1. Laminated Flooring

It might not be the thinnest product in the list but at 12mm maximum – it is just thin enough and as it is hard enough it will be able to cover the old flooring perfectly.

2. Luxurious Vinyl Flooring

It is very thin as also gives the warmth when stepping on it – it has luxurious wood looking that looks so real. So easy to install – just glue them over the old but even flooring.

3. Carpet

A wall to wall carpet will need a professional installer; it has thickness that soft so it will cover the material well and with the plush feel. It add luxurious to the room.

Flooring for the Disable

When comes to the renovation for the disable, we always emphasize in the grab bar the space for wheelchair or the mirror that tilted for the seated wheelchair people. Often we did not consider the type of flooring, this is the most important as the flooring can make the disable live their life in a more comfort way. Have a look at these floorings and do consider using them in public area too.

  1. Rubber flooring, this could be the best option for someone suffering from a physical disability. The soft and slip resistance quality offered the safe environment as if the accident do happened, it will cushion down the impact of falling. Especially for old people which tent to easily have a bone fracture from falling.  The slip resistant flooring will also stop them from falling easily.  This is absolutely easily maintenance material – whether spilling from frail person, it can be clean off immediately and thoroughly. It is the best choice for the hospital.
  1. Carpet, it is a common flooring choice for people with limited physical capabilities. It offer comfort while walking on it as well as keep your feet warm. But carpet is easily absorbed with the spilling liquids and stains. It is hard to clean off and may take some time and some expert advice to do the total cleansing.  One the way if you really like this product, is to use the carpet tiles which can be replaced piece by piece. You do not need to rips off the whole floor just to get rid of one stained spot.

Can you use Vinegar to clean most of your flooring?

No doubt you can use this solution to clean many things, but there are some materials that should not be used or not the appropriate to use with.

  1. Carpet Odors, you can use vinegar to get rid of stain on the carpet. But it does not work when comes to getting rid of an odors on your carpet. It can marks the smell but would not eliminate the cause of it
  2. Marble Flooring – it can be damaged by vinegar. Especially if it is very porous and the solution can penetrate easily.
  3. Hardwood Flooring, as vinegar is acidic- it will make the floor dull and damage the finish on the hardwood. To clean this type of floor- you can opt for a hardwood floor cleaner that will enhance and protect the shine and surface of the flooring.

Vinyl Plank flooring, should your buy cheap stuff?

No, when comes to renovation – do not try to save so hard. It will eventually bring you problem –sooner or later. When it surface out after your contractor left the job site or being paid fully, you will end up have to spend more money to resolve it yourself.

The cheap vinyl plank flooring is extremely thin – only about 2mm. and has zero embossing. The back is adhesive for it to stick on to the floor for DIY method. So you save money on the material as well as installation cost. It is worth it? NO, I strongly object to this – why?

First, the look – it really looks awful as it looks fake and from one look has no luxurious feel on it.

Secondly – the thin sheet need a hundred percent leveled flooring to receive, you will need to do the necessary work (this only can be done by the professional) before the final laying of the vinyl plank flooring.

So think carefully before you try this cheap stuff. Because, tearing them out is another tough job and you may end up spend more money than saving it.

Tips on How to have the house that always clean.

“Cleaning” this word always make me yawn…but I still want to live in a clean house. It is not only good for your health, your mood – it is good for a Fengshui for your house. But we are so busy and more tired after hard day of work. So here are some tips that will help you on this.

Try cleaning whenever you have made the mess out of it. Rather than leave them and promise yourself that you will clean them one day – well! that day is hard to come. Because by that time, you would have other things / areas that you have promised yourself to do it as well. So you know, when there are more – it will only make it less possible to achieve it.

So, for example – after you’ve done cooking, just wipe and clean up all the mess rather than leave some oily spots on the cabinet and they might not get cleaned forever.  Moreover, if you have white kitchen cabinet doors – they will slow turned to yellow – an ugly patches of yellow that make your kitchen looks older than their age.

Another way is to keep you house less cluttered! The lesser the things you have – there will be lesser to clean and tidy.

Top 5 favorite indoor flooring materials

When comes to choosing flooring materials, these types of flooring always one of the most thought about selection.

  1. Solid Wood Flooring, they are warm, nice to step on as well as suitable to any of interior decoration. The flaws are that they are getting more and more expensive since the resources from the forest are getting rarer due to over cutting of the trees. Be it legally or even illegally.
  2. Bamboo flooring, an alternative of solid wood as it is easier to find and is definitely a greener solution to the solid wood flooring.
  3. Ceramic tiles, it is easy to maintain as well as durable, comes in wide variety of design.
  4. Laminated flooring, the timber look alike flooring which only has approximated 3mm. layer of wood on top, is a cheaper way to get the wood flooring in timber look.  But they do have disadvantage, laminated flooring cannot withstand water, it got bloated when water seep in.
  5. Vinyl Flooring, why it is this material? – they are the cost saving material, durable as well as anti-slips. They come in wide variety of wood printing, tiling pattern, glitter flooring and speckle patterns you name it- they have it.

  1. Your cash register, it should be in a command position. There must be a wall behind you, no door or window as this will suggest a cash flown out through window or door.  The command position is opposite the entrance, you should be able to see anyone coming into your shop.
  1. Decorative your shop, most retail shop will have a lot of mirror panels. This can be good or bad, mirror that facing directly to the entrance will eventually bounce back the business. That’s mean every business will be reflected out of the entrance, immediately after it enter the shop.
  2. Your entrance, placing the bell at the door will attracted a good energy into your shop. The same goes with good lit up shop, this will also bring in great energy. So do replace any lamps that is not working or it will create bad energy instead.

Light Wood Flooring

Choosing the wooden flooring (be it a luxurious vinyl flooring, solid wood flooring or laminated flooring), light colour wood flooring is always the best choice. Why?

  1. It is the safest colour to look for; it gives warm feeling without making the room looks too small. Light colour will give the feeling of wider space. It has a classic look as well as casual look, depend on how you dress up the rest of the room.
  2. It is not easy to spot when it has scratches – with dark colour wood or plain colour, when scratched they will appear more obvious than the lighter wood.
  3. It makes the room looks brighter without giving a cold feel. You can use this type of floor in the dark area like corridor. You can also use this light wood in the kitchen, the area that need to look clean and tidy due to hygiene as you want the food to come from the clean place not the other way around.

Feng Shui Ideas for Retail Store

I have mentioned in my past blogs about how Feng Shui in Interior Design. Basic Feng Shui is always in line with good Interior Design – this applies to any space, especially in the Retail Store. You would want to make money if you open the stores. There are few tips to apply – this week we will focus on the entrance of your shop.

First thing to check is, to make sure that your shop entrance is not block by anything. Not only have you had to check if anything blocking inside your shop. It has to be checked form the front door and at lease 3metres from your door outward and observe if you found any of the points below.

Step out of your shop and start looking:-

  • If you need to make a detour while walking into your shop, do you need to steps side way to avoid the trees, the planter box or any bicycle track? If yes, you will need to clear it or move your entrance.

Vinyl Tile with Grouting

Mirror with Feng Shui, it can good or bad!

Mirror is a great source of energy reflection. With the proper placing – they can shift the good energy by reflecting it to the corner that you want. Look for the good corner of yours and use this mirror to reflect the light to that corner. Mirror also use for reflecting bad energy from entering your house.

Best to remember, do not put the mirror in front of your bed or your front door.

Mirror facing bed or reflecting your body while your lay on it, this is consider bad as it depletes your energy at night when your body is doing the most of its repair work.

Mirror facing your front door, mirror will push away all the good Feng Shui energy from flowing into your house. Front door is a mouth of house to absorb the good energy.   The advice is to shift the mirror to the position that it does not reflect the door.

Install Vinyl Flooring over the top of existing vinyl flooring?

Not a very good idea but it can be done. You will need to make sure that there is only one layer of old vinyl flooring below.  Another concern is that, the old vinyl flooring had to be well adhered to the base flooring.  But hold on!, how can you be so sure about this?

Although overlaying the vinyl flooring over one – can save you the cost of dismantling but if there is one flaw that has been miss out from the above suggestion.  Example, the glue of the first layer vinyl floor give way (could be due to the long term used and wear and tear) after you have installed the new layer over – then you will have to ripped off two layers of the flooring (old and newly install one!), cost of dismantling will increase new that there are two layers. And this will create an extra work, cost and time.  I would suggest that you rip off the old vinyl flooring then make good of the sub floor before you install the new one. This will not cost much and you can be sure that the new flooring is well install without any doubt.

So do not try too hard to save when comes to renovation – you may have to pay even more than what you have expected!

Wood vinyl tile – which way to lay it?

Now that you have chosen the wooden pattern you like. Let’s look at how to lay them, how to lay them in the best direction that will have your room look its best.

Best way to clean luxurious vinyl flooring

You will need to do a regular cleaning to protect and maintain the good vinyl flooring.  Daily cleaning for the dirty spot is a must, do not leave the dirty spots overnight as it will be harder to clean.

When you encounter the stubborn stains, do approach the professional and get the care instruction from your flooring supplier, use denature alcohol or stain removal made special for vinyl flooring.  Gently rub at the stain until it is removed.  You will need to avoid ammonia, abrasive cleaner, acetone, lacquer thinner and solvents as these product can damage the vinyl flooring.

Prevent damage on the vinyl flooring, after installation you will need to wait for the glue to settle down at least 24 hours before placing a heavy object above the floor.  Leaving a big piece of furniture on the vinyl flooring will create a recessed mark on this floor- so do use a floor protector under the table legs or heavy sofa.

Ideas for ECO Design

Reuse and Recycle, are your doing the house cleaning before this Chinese New Year? I am sure your will discover many trash at home and do not know what to do with them. Turn them into useful furniture or household items. I have some of these ideas from this interesting book call “ ECO DESIGN FURNITURE MEUBLES MUEBLES MOBILIÁRIO” , so let’s get creative!

  1. Turn your magazine and newspaper into your favorite seat. You will need; 35 to 40 magazines, old wooden stool and old pillow (with nice new pillow case) and nice leather straps.

Start by stack the magazines (for small seat) or newspaper (for the bigger one) on the wooden stool (if you cannot find one- then find the plywood that can be cut to size).   After stacking – make sure they have the height of about 450mm. Then tie them with the leather straps.

Traditional Way of Vinyl Installation, is it still good?

To get the best finish of vinyl flooring – the proper installation must be strictly observed, the traditional way is still proven more effective as it will last longer and make it easy for maintenance.  Below is how it work:-

1). Always start with self leveling as the cement floor alone will not be good enough for the perfect finish of vinyl flooring.

2). Final patch up of the sub-floor.

3). Apply Glue and leave it for at least 45 minutes.

Things you need to know before having the Outdoor Blind install at home

Outdoor blind had gained more popularity over the years; we have more and more inquiries about this type of window furnishing.  Judging from the recently completed new development be it condominium, executive condominium and even design and build home from HDB.  All will comes with big balcony and a super small living and dining area. Well, this prompts most designers or smart home owners to re-look into expanding the function of the big balcony. Either you convert this area into an outdoor dining or even outdoor barbecue kitchen with comfy seat.  All these cannot be done without blind, an outdoor blind will extend your interior space as well as adding a privacy make it feel just like an interior space.

Outdoor blind is a great investment, imagine that if you have them ready for renting out – your tenant will appreciate the thoughtfulness that you have put into design the space and make the out door usable area much more useful as indoor as well as outdoor.

But outdoor blind will need to be fix from ceiling to the floor, we will need the tension rope to hold the blind in place, when you live on high floor it could be dangerous to have your blind fly everywhere during windy or rainy days, some case the blind that was not install properly can even fly out of your house, imagine how dangerous when it landed in certain place.  I am strongly suggest that you use the professional to produce and install these types of blind and most importantly…do not use your outdoor blind as if it is a wall or protection that will cover your balcony from wind or rain; it does not design for such purpose.  It is there to shield you from the strong sun and prying eyes of your neighbours.

Feng Shui – What colour to use in each room?

Colour in interior design is the most important factor to consider and likewise in Feng Shui, certain colours create tranquil environments, while others stimulate the senses. Therefore different colour is suitable for certain room.

Yellow is suitable for kitchen as it is sunny and cheerful, create a delightful space for fun cooking while red is great for dining room (increase your appetite), but try to avoid using too fiery red as it is too strong. Pink is great for bedroom as it is the colour of love. Purple and light blue also help you to calm down and relax in your bedroom.

Feng Shui and Good Flooring Energy

In creating good energy for the flow of good Feng Shui, flooring is the foundation of your interior design thus it is almost the number one issue to consider here. Whether you are using wood patterned flooring or other hard material for flooring, the colour of wood you chose, the direction of plank you chose to lay or even the joint between the two material flooring – all can play the part in bringing in good or bad energy to you interior space. In good Feng Shui, it is best to have seamless joint in each area, as it will create the smooth flow or energy. If you have white flooring in your kitchen and suddenly it is connected with the dark tiles in your living area, the energy will surely have been blocked or stumbled at this point.

Choosing the right material for each area – this can be practiced base on the choice using in interior design principal. For example, carpet flooring is not suitable for bathroom as the area is always wet, the same principal apply in Feng Shui.  For example the cold tile is not mean for the bedroom as it is the cosy area for you to rest after the tired day.

The shapes and patterns of flooring material also determine how good or bad energy created. If you are using the timber plank, do make sure that you do not run the plank direction straight from the narrow walk way that direct to the window or exit doors. The reason is simple, you do not want the good energy to come in to you house and flow straight out of you window, you want to keep it roaming in side for a while. The square shape is also a great shape to use as it is represented a strong foundation of earth. It is very suitable for busy kitchen area as it will calm the place down, that is why, we often seen the floor tile in square shape settling in nicely in a busy kitchen.

Feng Shui for Kitchen Location on your Floor Plan

Kitchen is the most important part of your home in Feng Shui basic, it is determined your health and well-being.

The worst position of a kitchen is the one that the kitchen is close to the main door and it is the first you see when enter your home. Especially the oven that can be seen from front door.

When building your house, do remember “not to put your kitchen under the toilet” as toilet is the place where we wash away our dirt and therefore it is very inauspicious having kitchen under it.

Fire and water shall not be placed directly opposite each other hence the bathroom shall not be in front of the kitchen or at least not in front of your stove.

Good kitchen plan has also been recognized in Feng shui, the Triagle Principal in kitchen design where the stove, the fridge and the sink formed a triangle. This is auspicious in Feng Shui as well as giving the best working circulation in the kitchen area. Do not forget to tidy up your kitchen now and then, as uncluttered kitchen also a good Feng Shui to your home.

Want to know what is the best match of your floor colour in Feng Shui?

Ever wonder if your choice of flooring colour will enhance your luck or create bad energy for your space.

As the flooring represents your foundation, the energy is associated with the earth; the best colours are the earth colours. The easiest colour to choose is the wood floors, you can then start with what kind of tone that will coordinate with the rest of your decoration.

Alternatively you can also use the stone, tiles, laminate or even vinyl flooring that have the earthy tone.

How about the black (dark wood) or the white which are very popular in this day’s interior design, White is the colour that represent the Metal in Feng Shui – if your element is compatible with metal then this will be a good choice of colour as it will enhance your luck. In the opposite if your element is wood – the metal will exhaust your energy as well as your luck, you should use black (water) or brown (for wood) which will give good flow of energy.

Retro interior design, the design from the 60’s

Talk about Design from the past, one of the very famous designs came from the 60’s is the Retro Design. It is something that is not too far from our generation (if you are in your 40s or 50s, we may have lived in the house with such design when we are young. The “groovy design” with vivid colour and fun patterned wall paper. Now look at how to revive them and add them into your home.

  1. The colour, the colour palette could be a diverse mix of vibrant colours, the colour from Andy Warhol, the red, pink, blue, white, purple, orange and even silver. Or even you can pick it from the toy colour (one from under 3 years old baby)
  2. Walls, the motifs that used on wall paper is taken from the Nouveau and Deco art era. Just took them and enlarge them into a giant scale. Painted wall also work in this case, just choose one solid colour and add on the accent with large patterned murals
  3. Furniture and decorative display, now that the fun part, use hanging ball seat with some old design sofa (you can get it from some of the retro shop here in Singapore, like Lorgan). You can also imitate the style from the movie like AUSTIN POWER or JAMES BOND. Another way is to get the retro accessories, you can find them at flea market, a little hard in Singapore but if you are in USA, there are plenty to      visit, you can also find them in the garage sale. They are second hand items which are cheap and nice.
  1. The flooring, if you are able to recover some old tiles that would be best but if not, you can throw the shag pile rug on the floor, the longer the pile the better, instance make over!
  2. Lighting, go find the Lava lamp to add the complete touch of the retro.

It is really about revisiting the old memory, the feeling we have when we were young or when our parent were young. To me, it is always warm my heart.

Rustic Contemporary Design, use it for your home

  1. Start with flooring, as it will be the 2nd biggest space in your room and it will spread throughout many rooms in your home. You may use the dark texture like wood in wide dimension to imitate the rich natural look which always be found in this kind of design.

  1. Walls, the biggest surface of your home – use warm colour not a cool colour like pure white or blue, we are achieving the warm cozy feel of rustic charm.

We start with ceramic tiles; this material has been used ever since the ancient time and they are the favorite material of all time.

So choose them by the practically, aesthetically or even by considering your budget as both materials are great and reliable.

Do you know what is LUXURIOUS VINYL FLOORING?

If you do not know what Luxurious Vinyl Flooring is, you are not alone. Most people will refer to vinyl flooring as the vinyl sheet but there are other products that are the same as vinyl sheet but in the tiles form. The word LVT is the short form of this product and it is refer to resilient and attractive wood-looking vinyl flooring that comes in separate plank form, it is scratches proof and resistant to stain (the same quality for vinyl floor). So the way we would lay these plank is to have the random laying just like the real wooden flooring.

LVT

The name Luxury does not mean it is expensive, as the matter of fact; it is very economic in terms of price. LVT can be installed in most of the areas in our house – kitchen, bedroom and living room. It is also great for the Basement if you want to hardwood look; it is not suitable for this area – with moisture and humidity which can cause hardwood the warp. LVT is water resistant so you don’t have to worry about this problem but make sure you have done proper water proofing on the cement floor before laying the floor finishes.

Thinking about re-renovating your old house?

A lot of us live in the same old house for many years; many parts of our house will start to give way, looks old and perhaps outdated. It’s time to renew them. We have some tips here help the process go smoothly.

Know the steps or process of renovation, do some research on “how to” For example, if you want to demolish your kitchen and fabricate the new set. You may need to know what the new trend is and what the new technology in the kitchen is. Nowadays the local kitchen in Singapore does offer mechanism that came direct from Germany or Austria. You can have that fitted in your new kitchen but do the detail research before decided how or what you need for your new kitchen.

Clear away unwanted items in your house, cleaning and clearing the unwanted stuffs may seems like a tiring job but in the long run you will be able to look at your house clearly and once you have more space you will be able to think about what’s new in or what you could have in your new decorated house. Industrial Design For Your Home

In renovating the old ware house or industrial buildings, there have been a new immerge design which can be called “industrial look”. The rustic exposed finishes and structural element that has been enhanced instead of buried it – gives a new and fresh look that a lot of people have been source after.

In appreciating the raw and unfinished look, here is the 5 ways to try to archive one for your home.

  1. It is kind of fun to begin with, for example you do not have to worry about the imperfections and try to solve the edging details, nothing will go wrong in this case. The key is to be bold and play with it, for example you can enhance the crack on your wall by cracking it more till you see parts of brick behind. Afterwards, add colourful pieces of furniture in front of it.
  2. Look for your inspiration from the historical building, you can find the type of industrial details you like by visiting the old place that has been conserved. You will find exposed brick wall, timber roof trusses, and steel column – they are all exposed without boxed up, that is the beauty of this design.
  3. Recycling and adding an industrial elements into your modern design interior, have you seen someone using an old rustic metal wheel as legs of their coffee table, that’s what I mean by recycling, it will add more charm into you world without spending too much just follow your creativity mind and be bold.
  4. Add an impressive artwork, with a full brick wall you can add a splash of Graffiti art will create an exciting wall and leave the rest in simple and monotone colours.
  5. Look for reclaimed materials from the old building and make it one of your new furniture, or even use it as your ceiling trusses.

Flooring for Children’s Play Areas

Generally carpet is one of the popular choice to use when comes to children’s play areas, this is due to the fact that it is plush and soft which will act like a cushion flooring for the kids. This is to us, will protect our child from injuries from trips and falls. It is also absorb sound while children are playing, running and jumping. We do not want to disturb our neighbour living under our floor with this loud sound. But for our messy and clumsy kids, accident always happens. One way is to use the carpet tiles as they are easy to remove and replace when dirty and stain.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of Overlaying Flooring?

I often received this question from my customer. I can point out the obvious plus point here; it is cost saving for sure! The best example is, you have an old fashion floor tiles in your house and would like a quick and cost effective way of solving this. You can achieved warm and cozy feel by using Wood Vinyl Tile (Luxurious Floor Tiles) the work also time efficient as it take only half a day for 2 to 3 rooms space to complete it! Look at the result below.

The other advantage is, you safe on demolition work, and I am not talking about just the flooring. When you have the house completed with built-in furniture and clean smooth plaster wall. Dismantling the floor would mean the contractor might damage your plaster and paint wall or wallpaper as well as the built-in furniture. You will need to spend more money to get the Plasterer and Carpenters to do the job all over again.

This overlay flooring does comes with disadvantages, for example – if your existing floor were not done up done up without self-leveling process (resulting in the unevenness flooring). Overlaying might create unevenness on the finished flooring itself. In this case, thicker material might be able to solve it.

How to choose Good Quality Vinyl Flooring – look at specification

Vinyl Flooring is made up of Synthetic, petroleum based material. It is then overlaying with a layer of Urethane which will help in scratch resistance and stain marks. One of the most durable form of flooring available – easy to install and cost saving. To choose the good quality vinyl flooring you will need to look at the thickness of a wear layer (usually stated on the product specification) the thicker the ware layer, the better quality the vinyl flooring is. Thickness of the Vinyl Tile also worth considering, the thicker it is – the durability and sound absorption will be better.

So next time ask your supplier for the product specification in order not to be fool by your own contractor.

Below is the example you could find when selecting the Vinyl Flooring.

What is the best floor product for water resistant?

In my years of experience – I have used the laminated flooring before, it seem nice, easy and cheap. But once there was water pipe burst and the floor was soak with water. After a while – we noticed that the floor started to warp, this is due to material had absorbed water.

Vinyl wood plank is more water resistant. Laminated are forms of wood and absorb water. Vinyl plank repel water although water can seep through the gap where it was being put together. This is not a big problem – as you can always replace either one of them which peel off with the new piece.

Vinyl wood plank were made to look as natural – so you don’t have to worry about matching the new piece to the existing floor.

Tips for Vinyl Flooring Maintenance

  1. Avoid using wet mop; too much water will overly wet your floor.  Water will seep into cracks, seams and edges.  Water can destroy the glue that hold down the Vinyl to the floor, causing Vinyl to peel off or corner to curl.
  2. Add your big furniture with protective studs (on their feet); the heavy weight furniture that occupy permanent space will create dents / marks on your floor. So add the floor protector that can be easily find at home improvement store.
  3. Remove all soap after the wash.  Soap scum will leaves a film that collects dirt.  Stick to damp mopping with just water until the floor really needs a big cleaning.
  4. If your vinyl flooring is “no wax”, mean it does not need waxing at all.  It comes with polyurethane coating that made it shine.  Wax will not stick on to this coating and will leave on top surface and you will need to strip it off.  If your floor loosed its shine, then restore it with polish or sealant made for no-wax flooring.  It should keep your floor shining for at least a year.
  5. Do not use castor furniture; this can damage your vinyl flooring.

What to choose between Roller Blind and Curtain

One of the popular question from my customer who is looking for the Window Furnishing is “Roller Bind and Curtain?”

Although curtain is something most people will use as it is soft and provides classic look.  But if the price is your concern, why not try Roller Blind.

Roller blind gives off a Modern Look as well as economic in price.  Curtain will cost you more as they are made of wide pieces of fabric and do not forget that you need a thick fabric to let them roll down nicely.  Fabric will bring up the cost as well as the sewing cost.  But when comes to roller blind, you will only need to have good quality polyester fabric and roller mechanism.  You can choose how much light to penetrate through your window by selecting different degree of openness of fabric. You can also add on the black out fabric for the most privacy in your room.

Do not forget the window treatments as it can make a dramatic change to your home.  By using shiny curtains, it will jazz up the space in a modern and dynamic way.  Sometimes, a simple classic dark grey tone of Roller Blind is economic in price and stylish too!  Do not live with naked windows that will show the fuzzy details of your home and make your investment or property look cheap.  In addition, there is also no privacy for yourself.

5.      Do Not Forget the Lighting Either

Great lighting create different ambient to the room.  We know that warm white works well with our cozy home.  Install recessed lighting or small spotlight to enhance the Art Piece or Small sculpture will definitely give off a beautiful ambient.

If you have a long corridor and do not know what to do with it, one of my suggestion is to make use of the unique wall light – just line them up as if they are one of your Installation Art.

6.      Do not follow the Trend Blindly

All of us want our house to be Hip and Trendy, some may overdo it by picking the latest, coolest products available in the market.  But these trendy items will not last long either.  I like to choose a simple non-fuzzy detail that will last for years and then jazz them up with Hip accessories.  Remember, you can change the accessories every now and then, but not your sofa or your wall paneling.

7.      Renovate Your Master Suite

One of the easiest way to add value to your home is to just renovate your master bedroom.  If you are selling your house, this is one of the cheapest way to make your home looks new.  The buyer is mostly like the feeling of stepping into a cozy master bedroom which might be theirs in the future.

8.      Add a Large Sofa

Comfortable seating in the Living room will add most value into your family area.  As sofa is the main furniture in this area – invest in one that will provide plenty of seat for everyone.  You can add lots of throw pillow in various colour and patterns – you can change the cushion covers to match every moods and seasons whenever you want.

9.      Conversational Space

Be it keeping the whole family together or keep your invited guests entertain.  Just add more seats into your family area – you can use different types of seat such as lounge chair, square stool or small bench and arrange them to create a conversational atmosphere.

10.      An Accent Piece

Complete your décor by adding accent piece into your design.  In a room with contemporary piece of coffee table and neutral palette sofa, you can add an unusual armchair in a vibrant colour with eye-catching artwork or cozy rug and that’s it! The room is completely value added!!!

11.      Choosing the right flooring materials

That will depends much more on your budget.  If you have a tight budget or planning to sell your property in few years or even renting out, you can go for materials that are economic in pricing, easy to maintain or replaced.  Yes, you can even consider going for Vinyl Wood Plank.  They are economic, durable and their design is comparable to the real timber flooring.  They are widely used in home renovation

How to choose the best Vinyl Flooring

Choosing Vinyl Flooring for your home…. it is very important to understand the characteristic of this flooring.  Vinyl Sheet Flooring has a layer of form which adds some comfort to your feet and helps to keep dropped items from breaking easily.  However, as it is soft – when you leave a heavy object on the floor for too long, it will leave marks on that area.  So choose the vinyl flooring with patterns rather than the plain solid colour.

Vinyl tile flooring, the core material is solid therefore it absorb the noise and does not chip off when something drop on it – this is an advantage when comparing with floor tiles.  If you do not like the look of vinyl flooring (mostly comes with speckle and dots), you can opt for Vinyl Wood Flooring.  The same type of flooring that comes in natural wood print with added texture – it could looks so real and will create a cozy room in an instant!

Bubbles on your floor!!!

This week, we talk about case study from our new client.  He came to us with a problem after the sub-contractor has done up the vinyl flooring for him at an extremely low cost (sound good isn’t it?  but that is where the problem started)

After vinyl flooring was laid in our client’s Healthcare Centre, there are few bubbles appear, signifying that it had de-bonded from the subfloor.  The subcontractor then tried to replace the affective areas but the same problem persisted!

We received a call from this client and after inspecting the site, we concluded that this problem cause by the moisture that surfaced from the floor (usually happen on the first floor).  This could also cause by the use of too little adhesive.

Water proofing can prevent this problem but it has to be done with care by the professional as if it fail – this will lead to another problem “Hydrostatic Presser” which mean the presser that pushed the vapour up above ground thus caused the bubbles under the vinyl floor.  Professional installer will be able to check the waterproofing before the Vinyl Installation.

Cost of fixing the problem on site, can be expensive – we always recommended to our client to look for a professional, rather than just look at the price.  Duraflexz Vinyl Flooring is one of the affordable and experience supplier which are trusted by many clients in Singapore.

To create an unusual look on vinyl flooring, laying them in different patterns will offer a distinctive look.  Either using standard size or cut sizes to form a special design.  Mixing and matching colours and patterns gives new design to your floor.

Our suggestion shown here using vinyl tiles in standard size as well as cut sizes.

What is the different between laminate flooring and vinyl plank flooring?  Which will be more suitable if I have a small dog at home?

Laminated flooring is a wood board with top coat of wood pattern applied to a melamine laminate.  This can be easily ruin by water or moisture (this include dog’s urine).  Vinyl Planks are made of vinyl, these are very washable and handle water better than laminate flooring.

Vinyl Plank is more difficult to install, mostly using glue on to the flat surface.  this product is mostly supplied and installed in a very economical price.  Laminate flooring can be laid directly over most of existing floor, you will still need some skills to install.
